# Missing tab and recovery

> Recover a missing Grunt tab, re-enable the add-in, and use the troubleshooting tool

Use this page when Grunt disappears from PowerPoint or does not load after an install or update.

## Start with the troubleshooting tool

The legacy support guidance recommends the automated troubleshooter before manual repair.

To use it:

1. Download the Grunt troubleshooter package from the legacy support flow.
2. Unzip the files.
3. Run `Grunt.PowerPoint.Troubleshooter.exe`.
4. Apply any fixes it reports.
5. Restart PowerPoint.

## Confirm Grunt is installed

On Windows:

1. Open **Add or remove programs**.
2. Search for `Grunt`.
3. Confirm the app is installed.

If it is not installed, install the latest version from [app.grunt.pro/download](https://app.grunt.pro/download).

## Clear stuck PowerPoint processes

If Grunt was disabled after a crash or interrupted startup:

1. Close all visible PowerPoint windows.
2. Open Task Manager with `Ctrl` + `Shift` + `Esc`.
3. End any remaining `PowerPoint` processes, including background ones.
4. Start PowerPoint again.

## Re-enable a disabled add-in

If PowerPoint disabled Grunt:

1. Open **File** > **Options** > **Add-ins**.
2. Set **Manage** to **Disabled Items**.
3. Click **Go**.
4. Select Grunt and click **Enable**.
5. Restart PowerPoint if needed.

## Re-enable an inactive COM add-in

If Grunt is inactive instead of disabled:

1. Open **File** > **Options** > **Add-ins**.
2. Set **Manage** to **COM Add-ins**.
3. Click **Go**.
4. Check the Grunt add-in.
5. Click **OK**.

## If the problem returns

* Restart the computer and repeat the checks
* Reinstall Grunt
* If Windows is blocking Office add-ins, see [Troubleshooting](/powerpoint-add-in/user/troubleshooting)

This page expands the recovery flow summarized in [Troubleshooting](/powerpoint-add-in/user/troubleshooting).
