Start with the troubleshooting tool
The legacy support guidance recommends the automated troubleshooter before manual repair. To use it:- Download the Grunt troubleshooter package from the legacy support flow.
- Unzip the files.
- Run
Grunt.PowerPoint.Troubleshooter.exe. - Apply any fixes it reports.
- Restart PowerPoint.
Confirm Grunt is installed
On Windows:- Open Add or remove programs.
- Search for
Grunt. - Confirm the app is installed.
Clear stuck PowerPoint processes
If Grunt was disabled after a crash or interrupted startup:- Close all visible PowerPoint windows.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - End any remaining
PowerPointprocesses, including background ones. - Start PowerPoint again.
Re-enable a disabled add-in
If PowerPoint disabled Grunt:- Open File > Options > Add-ins.
- Set Manage to Disabled Items.
- Click Go.
- Select Grunt and click Enable.
- Restart PowerPoint if needed.
Re-enable an inactive COM add-in
If Grunt is inactive instead of disabled:- Open File > Options > Add-ins.
- Set Manage to COM Add-ins.
- Click Go.
- Check the Grunt add-in.
- Click OK.
If the problem returns
- Restart the computer and repeat the checks
- Reinstall Grunt
